Reflexology is based on the principle that there are reflex points on the feet which correspond to each organ, gland and structure in the body.  By stimulating these reflexes, we can reduce any blockages and restore balance to the corresponding areas.

The history of reflexology is unknown. It is said to have originated in Oriental pressure point therapy, but it seems that it was used in ancient Egypt, as evidenced in the wall painting, below. In the early 20th century, its concept was enhanced by research into “zone therapy,” which is based on the idea that there are 10 energy zones in the body, from head to feet.  Energy is constantly flowing through these zones which end in the feet, hands and scalp. When this energy runs freely, we are healthy. When it’s blocked by tension or congestion, disease occurs. By treating the reflexes, the blocks are broken down and harmony is restored to all systems. In practical application, the thumb is used in a “caterpillar” motion, walking firmly and sensitively on the appropriate areas of the feet to restore balance or to act as a diagnostic technique.

The therapist may experience a sensation of crystal-like deposits, a granular or bubbly feeling in the area which is blocked.  These areas may be tender, so it is important to work sensitively to clear any blockages.
